Nature & Outdoors
We are incredibly fortunate to live surrounded by natural beauty—and this is more than just scenery. Nature-based therapy is increasingly backed by research as a powerful pathway to healing. Exposure to green spaces reliably activates the parasympathetic nervous system, easing stress, lowering cortisol, reducing blood pressure, and helping us shift out of fight-or-flight. (Source 1)
In just a few minutes outdoors, our bodies respond: breathing deepens, heart rate slows, and the mind begins to settle. (Source 2) And when we combine walking with conversation—“walk-and-talk” therapy—we see added benefits: improved mood, reduced burnout, enhanced mental clarity, and deeper emotional processing. A 2023 systematic review of nature-based walking interventions found that connecting with natural environments can significantly reduce anxiety, negative rumination, and stress, while uplifting mood, optimism, and mental well-being compared to urban walks. (Source 4) Other recent meta-analyses extend these findings, confirming that time in nature supports attention restoration, mood regulation, and overall psychological resilience. (Source 5)
In my practice, I frequently include nature walks or outdoor play—whether in a forested trail, along a local path, or simply in my yard. We may pause to notice sunlight on leaves, feel the breeze, watch the bugs work tirelessly, or sit in quiet reflection. This sensory immersion helps ground the body, calm nervous system activation, and open space for reflection and insight.
Because we have access to outdoor trails and green space nearby, many sessions include walking while we talk—a gentle way to let the body move as the mind opens. In this rhythm, you may find ideas, emotions, or clarity begin to shift more organically.
If the idea of stepping outside your therapy room appeals to you, we can explore weaving nature into our sessions. Let the earth, air, and quiet invitation of living systems support your healing journey. Just ask me how.
